How Often Should a Handpan Be Retuned?

A handpan should be retuned because its sound or measured behavior has changed persistently—not simply because a date on the calendar has arrived.

01

There is no single interval for every instrument

Tuning stability depends on shell material, construction, playing force, transport, impacts, temperature history and the individual instrument. Some handpans remain stable for years, while an accidental drop can create an immediate problem. A routine check is useful, but it is not the same as automatically retuning.

The original maker is often the best first contact because they know the instrument's material, build and intended voicing. Ask whether they recommend periodic inspection and what changes they consider significant for that particular handpan.

02

Build a repeatable baseline

Check the handpan in a quiet room after it has settled to a normal indoor temperature. Use the correct A4 reference, strike one field gently, and repeat each reading. Save the note, frequency and cents direction only after the display becomes stable.

A short recording and a table of stable readings can help you compare the instrument months later. Keep the microphone position and test conditions similar. Differences caused by another phone, a louder strike or a cold shell should not be mistaken for long-term detuning.

Listen for change

New beating, reduced sustain or an unstable resonance can matter even when the fundamental looks close.

Look for consistency

A concern is stronger when several careful checks show the same direction and amount of change.

Record any incident

Tell the tuner about a drop, hard impact, extreme heat or other event that preceded the change.

03

Request an assessment before a repair

Contact an experienced handpan tuner when a shift remains after the instrument returns to stable conditions, when a note develops obvious beating or when physical damage is visible. A professional can assess the fundamental, octave, fifth, sustain and interaction with neighboring fields.

Do not press, hammer or bend a field to chase a browser reading. Retuning changes tension in a connected shell, and an untrained correction can disturb several resonances at once.

Try a measured check

Open the handpan tuner

Play one note at a time and wait for a stable reading.
